Hamidi Belaid is a Moroccan master calligrapher established in Jakarta. Specialist of the maghribi script from a young age, he later obtained ijazas in the naskh and thuluth styles from master Hasan Çelebi in Istanbul in 1997, and diwani jali and nasta’liq from Professor Ali Alparslan in 2000 and 2005.
Between 1992 and 2008, Hamidi Belaid was professor of calligraphy at the Royal College in the Royal Palace at Rabat. From 2008, he was in Cairo, where he trained students in Arabic calligraphy and Islamic arts at al-Azhar University until 2016, when he moved to Singapore to found the Bustan al-Khatt Center. Since 2018 Hamidi Belaid is based in Jakarta, where he continues to teach Arabic calligraphy.
Since 1999 Hamidi Belaid has copied eight Qur’ans in the maghribi script and continues to produce numerous calligraphic works.
In June 2024, he welcomed the CallFront team to Fez, his hometown, to share his expertise on the maghribi script, and his knowledge of the calligraphic inscriptions adorning the various monuments in the city.
