Mohameden Ahmed Salem is a master calligrapher and researcher in the field of calligraphy and manuscripts in Mauritania.

He learned Mauritanian calligraphy from a group of calligrapher sheikhs in the Mauritanian traditional school of Mahdara and relied on himself to learn other Arabic calligraphy styles. Mohameden Ahmed Salem also holds degrees in Islamic studies, English literature, civilization, and media, as well as a doctoral thesis in history and civilization entitled « Arabic Calligraphy in the Sahara and the Sahel (its historical development and civilizational impact until the end of the 19th century).

His interest and experience in maghribi calligraphy and the West Africa region has led him to publish articles and books on these topics and participate in international symposiums and workshops. He has written various copies of the holy Qur’an, including the official Mauritanian Qur’an, the first printed Mauritanian Qur’an, published in Nouakchott in 2012. In 2021 he won a competition organized by the Mauritanian Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Original Education to write a new official Qur’an for the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. This copy will be published before the end of 2024.
